Biography

Zann Rictus is a contemporary sculptor based in Omaha, Nebraska, whose work explores the relationship between natural materials, architectural form, and abstraction. Working primarily in reclaimed hardwood, resin, and mixed media, he creates sculptural objects that investigate the dialogue between nature and human intervention.

Originally trained in painting and printmaking, Rictus developed his artistic practice through decades of architectural woodworking and museum exhibit fabrication. His professional experience includes the creation of exhibition environments for nationally recognized museums and cultural institutions, where craftsmanship, storytelling, and material expression converge. This foundation informs a studio practice rooted equally in technical precision and artistic exploration.

Rather than imposing predetermined forms, Rictus responds to the inherent qualities of each piece of reclaimed wood. Grain, spalting, voids, movement, and natural edges become active elements within each composition. Carefully considered geometric interventions create a visual conversation between organic growth and intentional design.

His sculptures occupy the space between fine art and functional craft while resisting the conventions of both. Artist Statement

My work begins with the material.

Every piece of reclaimed wood carries a history that cannot be replicated. Its grain, movement, scars, and imperfections are the visible record of time. Rather than correcting or concealing those qualities, I allow them to guide the direction of each sculpture.

Working in reclaimed hardwood, resin, and mixed media, I create compositions that explore the relationship between organic form and intentional design. The process is less about imposing an idea onto the material than discovering the possibilities already present within it. Each intervention is measured against what the wood naturally offers, creating a balance between what has grown and what has been made.

My background in architectural woodworking and museum fabrication taught me discipline, precision, and respect for craftsmanship. In the studio, those skills become tools for artistic inquiry rather than functional construction. I am interested in the point where craftsmanship becomes sculpture—where familiar materials begin to communicate ideas beyond their practical purpose.

The resulting works exist between natural artifact and contemporary object. They invite viewers to slow down, observe closely, and consider the quiet dialogue between nature and human intention.
